Study Summary Sheet

After Learning:

1. Rest for consolidation (5–10 min)

  • Do nothing mentally demanding or distracting

2. Delay each review (10 min–3 hr)

  • Space out review if possible to increase effort and memory trace strength.

  • Try to review the same day to catch the memory before it's completely forgotten

Anything declarative (facts, concepts):

Mastery Loop:

1. Free recall w/ stepwise cueing

  • Free recall everything you can

  • Look at an overview of the topic, and recall anything else you can

2. Review the material

  • Continue to recall what you can as you review the material

3. For each missed detail...

  • Self-explain the detail in context

    • without peeking

  • If applicable, self-explain the "why?"

  • Write down a recovery cue to recall the detail later

4. Final recall

  • Recall every missed detail on the recovery cue list

  • Repeat until no recovery cues are left

Step 2: Put a card in the "Free Recall" deck

  • front: lecture / reading topic

  • back: list of subtopics (doesn't have to be perfect) AND (if applicable): link to source material

Anything procedural (skills, problem solving):

Step 1: Solve a sample of problems representative of what you learned until proficient:

  • Attempt the problem on your own first.

  • Check a worked example (AI, slides, book).

  • If wrong: try the problem again from memory.

    • Don’t move on until you get it right unaided.

  • Use conceptual self-explanation to explain why each step works.

Step 2: Put problems into the "Practice" deck as you complete them

Regular Study

  • Complete all scheduled cards daily

    • Declarative: use mastery loop (process listed above)

    • Procedural: use process listed above

  • Take a 15 minute break every 90 minutes for efficient consolidation (use Pomodoro timer)
